Saguaros

It was a warm and beautiful day today, just like the desert is supposed to be.

Because of the lifestyle I live, the weather is important to me, and I keep up not only with the local Arizona weather but also the national weather to see what's going to happen in the future. And a while back, I noticed that when they're showing cold fronts and other weather conditions coming in over California heading East, there's usually a part of the weather problems that seem to miss the southwest corner of Arizona, and if you look at it on a map you will see that the southwest corner of Arizona is basically the Sonoran desert which is where the Saguaro [Sa-war-ro] cactus grows.

I had never paid attention to it before, even though I've spent a lot of time in the Sonoran desert, but for some reason, the storms and cold fronts generally bypass the southwest corner of Arizona, which is why it's a desert. The Sonoran Desert stays warm enough to keep the Saguaro cactus alive instead of freezing and dying. And that's why when it gets cold in other places, I head for where the Saguaros live, knowing that it will be the warmest place I can find while remaining in the United States.

It wouldn’t be a tourist trap without at least one place that sells T-shirts.

This is actually the London Bridge Mall. You can drive to it, walk to it, arrive in your boat, or if you’re feeling adventuresome, swim to it.
