Whitewater Draw

Feeling in the mood to move, I saddled up this morning at about 9 o'clock and set my destination for Whitewater Draw to spend a few days taking pictures of the Sandhill Cranes and whatever other bird gets in my way. It's an easy drive on a two-lane blacktop, except for the last few miles, which are dirt roads and reportedly extremely slippery if it rains. There was space available in the boondocking area of Whitewater Draw, so I pulled in and made myself at home.

I've always been able to find a boondocking spot to camp at Whitewater Draw, even though there are only six or eight spaces. If vans and truck campers are there, there's room for eight, but if trailers and larger RVs pull in, there's only room for six or fewer. It's not a good place to bring a class "A;" you might make a lot of people mad by doing that.

My secret to always getting a boondocking spot, even though there are so few, is arriving at the best time, usually about 10 a.m. By then, people who have stayed the night and are going to leave have left. And normal people who arrive later in the day haven't got there yet. But there's still a lot of luck involved.

But if I don't see a place to stay when I get there, I drive down to the day parking lot 100 feet away and hang around there, keeping an eye on the boondocking area so I can pull in if anyone pulls out. That's what has always worked for me, but the important thing is to get there before lunch because, by afternoon, it's almost always full of people staying for the night.

But I do have a plan "B." A boondocker should always have a Plan "B." About half a mile down the dirt road, there's an overflow area for the regular boondocking area, and you can stay there until space opens up at the regular area. I've never had to use plan "B," but it's always good to know it's there.

This is what you do when you can no longer afford to feed your horse. Doc Holliday used to ride one of these whenever he was down on his luck and the cards weren’t going his way.

Busy day in Tombstone.

Nice Harley for sale. I wonder if I could hang It on the back of the camper?
