Rain in the desert, part two
‘‘Into each life, some rain must fall.’’ And when you're a boondocker, you have to pay close attention to that rain, the boondocking area you’re in, and the possibility of your area being affected by that rain. Of course, this is largely guesswork, but a little knowledge of the area and guessing based on experience can go a long way to keeping you out of trouble.
There was measurable rain predicted for today, and looking around at the area I was boondocked in, I could see areas where vehicles had been driving through soft mud, which had now hardened, so the deep tracks through the mud were still visible. I don't know how long those tracks had been there or how much rain it took to turn the dirt to mud, but these areas were scattered around and prevalent enough that I figured I needed a change of venue.
Driving across the road was all it took to see that even though I was only a couple hundred yards away from my previous boondocking area and still on Arizona trust lands, I saw no sign of dried mud. So, not wanting to take a chance, no matter how remote, I stayed in this new area that looked like no muddy areas might get me stuck between my chosen boondocking spot and the dirt road that would get me back to the pavement.
In an area like I am now, where there are a lot of dry washes, one has to be careful not to camp too close to them just in case it rains hard, and they overflow. You also have to be careful not to drive across them if there’s a chance of heavy rain and find out you can't get back across if they're flooded. That's never happened to me, but since I spend a lot of time around other boondockers, they sometimes have one or two scary, dry-wash stories they're willing to share.

It rained today, not much, just a few puddles worth.
This is the huge Taiwanese chip manufacturing plant that President Trump is talking about being the largest one in the country. It’s built right across the highway from Ben Avery’s gun range.
The shooters need these carts, see all the rifles and shotguns she’s using? She also has to carry ammunition for all those guns, and that stuff is heavy.
I wouldn’t want to be this cowboys horse.
