My favorite spot
Weird!! Here it is the day before a major holiday, and Elephant Butte State Park is largely empty. I don't know why. There must be something going on that I don't know about, but you would think there would be some people who want to have a family Thanksgiving dinner at the Park, but apparently not. Not that I want a bunch of people here; I'm just surprised that there isn't.
I got my favorite spot at the Elephant this morning. Somebody was in it when I got here, but this morning at daybreak, it was empty, so I hopped quickly like a bunny into my favorite spot and am now happily ensconced right where I belong.
There are many spots I like to boondock at the elephant; in fact, the only place I don't like to boondock is the beach. The beach has all kinds of problems for boondocking, and here are a few.
1... There are areas of soft sand on the beach, and if you don't have the proper tires and some knowledge about dealing with the local sand, it's easy to get stuck.
2... The beach is extremely unlevel, so the locals bring shovels and shovel the sand out from under the tires on the high side to level up. Blocks under the low side don't work; they sink into the sand.
3... It's fairly noisy down on the beach. Loud music comes from all different directions, almost loud enough to drown out the racket from the contractor generators that everybody owns.
4... Speaking of noise, the beach attracts a younger crowd, and the younger folks are way noisier than us old geezers.
So, all in all, I would say everything's going great at the Elephant. I'm where I want to be, and I'm staying here for free.

Early morning fishermen: As a rule of thumb, in salt water, you fish the tides. In freshwater, you fish in the early morning and late afternoon.
The Marina at Elephant Butte
For some reason, this picture makes the Marina in the middle of the picture look like an old riverboat.
