It looks like fall Is just about over
It looks like next week, the beautiful Fall weather will finally creep out the back door with nary a wave goodbye. The 10-day forecast shows that starting next Tuesday, there will be highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s for a week straight. And just to make sure that all the flatlanders know what's happening, next Wednesday, there's a 60% chance of snow.
It's been snowing in the mountains for a long time, and the only question is, is there enough snow to open the ski areas by Thanksgiving? Some ski areas open before then, but Thanksgiving has been the traditional arrival of the ski season. Most ski areas now have snowmaking equipment, so it's not much of a problem getting open by then because all it takes is getting down below freezing at night, which is no problem in the high country.
Of course, none of that means anything to me, except that a lot of skiers and snowboarders means that mountain towns make a lot of money, which in a roundabout way benefits the residents of Colorado.
I remember one year, I think it was in late October or early November when the Denver Broncos were playing a televised game at home. I recall watching it on TV, and during game time, it started snowing almost like a blizzard; at times, you could hardly see the players on the field. The snow was coming down so hard. They said that after that, the reservations at the ski areas in Colorado were off the charts because so many people wanted to take advantage of all that snow. And the next summer, more tourists visited Colorado that year.
It appears that my disdain for snow is not shared by folks who live in hot places and have never lifted so much as a shovelful of the dangerous white stuff. So, as far as I'm concerned, they can have it. They can slide on it, slip on it, drive on it, build temporary things out of it, and even live in it, as long as I can watch it on the news as I leisurely sip a cold one from the shade of a giant Saguaro in the desert somewhere in Arizona.
