Ben Avery gun range, Phoenix, Arizona.
I haven't talked about Ben Avery Gun Range lately, and no, I’m not in Phoenix. I’ve just been thinking about it because it used to be one of my favorite spots. Unfortunately, things have changed, and I no longer wish to boondock there. It’s sad because I have many great memories of Ben Avery, but it seems that memories will be all that remains.
It appears to be the case everywhere I go now: Ben Avery has raised its prices—surprise, surprise! It requires reservations ahead of time; who could’ve seen that coming? It has also increased its rules and regulations to make it easier for the State of Arizona employees who work there and less convenient for its customers… I’m shocked!
Ben Avery Gun Range, the largest public shooting facility in the country, used to feel like home to me because I spent so much time there when my oldest son was shooting competitively at the trap range. Back then, almost everybody who worked there and many of the people who shot there knew my son, and we were treated like family. But times change quickly and easily, but it’s not so easy for the people involved.
I can still go there and watch some of the events if I want to, like the “End of Trail” cowboy shoot that's happening late next month, but I don't want to boondock there anymore. It’s just too expensive, with too many rules and regulations.
Fortunately, there's a huge Arizona trust land about two miles from Ben Avery where I can stay. It's free and has very few burdensome regulations, but it doesn't have that feeling of "belonging" that I had at Ben Avery when the guy who ran the whole place and has since retired knew my son and me and ensured we were taken care of.
